What is Step Swap?
Step Swap is a European community for people whose left and right feet are different shoe sizes. If one foot is a 42 and the other a 43, buying a single pair always wastes one shoe. Step Swap pairs you with a SoleMate who has the opposite mismatch, so two people who would each waste a shoe instead complete one fair swap and both end up with a pair that fits. The same matching also works for single-foot needs, spare-shoe needs, and same-size swaps where two people simply want different colours.
How a shoe swap works
Finding and completing a swap takes four steps:
- Enter your EU sizes. Type your left and right shoe sizes on the homepage or community page to preview how many SoleMates match before you sign in. Matching uses a ±1 EU tolerance, so close sizes still connect.
- Find a SoleMate. Browse anonymized matches, then sign in for free with Google to message someone whose sizes mirror yours.
- Agree and pay for labels. When you both agree to swap, each person pays only for their own inbound parcel — carrier shipping plus a small flat shop fee. Payment is held and released if the swap expires.
- Keep the shoe that fits. Each person keeps the shoe in their size and ships the other shoe to their SoleMate. Two mismatched pairs become two wearable pairs.
Who Step Swap is for
Step Swap is built for anyone with mismatched shoe sizes, a single-foot or spare-shoe need, or a same-size pair they would happily trade for a different colour. Joining, creating a profile, browsing match counts, and messaging are always free — you only pay carrier shipping and a flat shop fee when you actually complete a swap, and the exact total is shown in chat before you pay.
Why swap instead of buying two pairs
When your feet are different sizes, a normal shoe shop forces a bad choice: buy one pair that fits only one foot, or buy two pairs in two sizes and pay twice while four shoes go to waste. Step Swap removes that waste. Because every swap pairs you with someone whose mismatch mirrors yours, two half-used purchases turn into two complete, wearable pairs. You pay for shipping and a small shop fee instead of a second full-price pair, and fewer barely-worn shoes end up unused at the back of a wardrobe. It is the practical, lower-cost answer for people who have spent years rounding up, rounding down, or simply putting up with shoes that never quite fit both feet.
How SoleMate matching works
Matching is based on your real EU sizes, not guesswork. You tell Step Swap your left and right size, and we look for a SoleMate whose sizes mirror yours, so each of you keeps the shoe that fits and ships the other. Matching uses a small tolerance of about one EU size, so you still connect with close — not only identical — sizes instead of waiting for a perfect stranger. Match previews are anonymized: before you sign in you can see how many SoleMates already exist for your sizes, and you only share details once you both choose to connect. That keeps your profile private while still showing, up front, whether the community can actually help you.
Shipping and payment safety
Each swapper pays only for their own inbound parcel — the shoe coming to them — so costs stay fair and predictable. Shipping is carrier-priced for the route between your two countries, plus one small flat shop fee, and the exact total is always shown in chat before you pay. Payments are handled by Stripe and held rather than released straight away: if a swap is not completed in time, the hold is released so you are not left out of pocket. Step Swap currently supports the EU routes listed on the delivery fees page, and the price you see before paying is the price you pay.
